PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

1. According to the video – how can you find out if you have brushed your teeth thoroughly?

2. How long should you brush your teeth according to the video? Do you agree or not?

3. Can you develop on another aspect of time/tooth-brush/brushing technique that you learnt about in Preventology? (Try to write about a differenta aspect than that presented by your colleague/s.

Below is an advertisement of Waterpick waterfloss. What do you think of it?

  1. We learned another brush technique at Preventology called sulcus brushing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MG6WCRCO2M ). We learned that this is the most effective technique to remove the dental plaque from among the teeth. It is important that for this brushing you have to use a soft toothbrush, because too hard brush may damage the gum. We learned about plaque disclosing tablets too. These are useful not only for children, but also for adults. With the tablets the dentist or parents can find out if the tooth brushing it was correctly or not.

    1. The commentator says in this video that you should wash your teeth 5 minutes. I agree this idea, because we learned that you have to touch every surface of every tooth with toothbrush 5-10 times to clean it correctly. It follows that the toothbrush has to take 3- 5 minutes every occasion.

      Delete
    2. OK, Orsolya, so you agree WITH what is mentioned in the video about washing the surface of every tooth with THE toothbrush FOR 5-10 minutes (in capitals you have the error correction :-))

You can also Reply to your colleagues' comments, not only mine, ok?

  3. The first thing that came into my mind was '' where do I get one?'', and the second question that came was'' Is the water flosser expensive?. If anyone knows, where can I buy one, plese reply. If the statements and the statistics in this video are true, then, the water flosser is a great profilactic tool. I have to admit that I use the flossing tehnique not very often, but the wather flosser seems to bee a ''cure'' for those like me.

    1. Would you recommend it to a dentist or you think it is suitable just for personal home use?

    2. The wather flosser is created for personal home use, for those who are not using the dental floss ,or for those who are using it in a incorrect manner. We all know that the corect flossing tehnique is esential for preventing a gingival retraction, otherwise we will end up doing more harm than good( periodontal disease). This is why I think the wather flosser is perfect for personal home use.

    4. I meant water flosser, and this reminded me of a joke that I heard in a movie. In the movie, a man was plaing the trumpet not so well, rather awful and one guy, standing in the audience, said to the man sitting next to him: '' I think, it's a combination between jazz and funk, called.....JUNK! 5. I agree with you Cristi. I think that the water flosser would be an excellent choise for me too . I'm not used to flossing and I find it difficult with conventional methods.

  4. According to the video, we can use plaque disclosing tablets. They are very useful because they color the plaque and the calculus in a showy way. This helps us to see the areas of our teeth we must brush better. And, as it is mentioned in the video as well, they are also useful to check the efficiency of the children’s oral hygiene.

Here, we are told to brush our teeth 5 minutes. I do agree with it, but I think there is no problem if it takes more, we just have to pay attention not to hurt the gum.

There are many tooth-brushing techniques, but every patient has his own dental necessities. For this reason the dentist have to teach his patients how to combine vertical, horizontal, circular moves in order to reduce dental plaque as much as it is possible, even in hard accessible areas.

    1. Hi Cristina, I would challenge you to make a survey among your acquaintances, friends (not students in dental medicine), neighbours and see how long it takes for them to brush their teeth. You say that a brushing can take even more than 5 minutes.... I'd be curious to find out what the situation really is.

    2. As expected, many people around us don’t brush their teeth more than 3-4 minutes. For this reason, I think it is our duty, both as friends and dentistry students, to explain them correct brushing-techniques. In this way, 3-4 minutes will be enough for them to have an excellent oral hygiene.

    3. I made a research in my neighbourhood and I was shocked hearing that some of the people do not brush their teeth at all( in the twentyfirst century!),some of them brush their teeth for a very short time-2 or 3 minutes-and others wash their teeth unsystematic.

    4. Debora, it is shocking indeed, but unfortunately this happens because of the high level of poverty in our country. Usually, people don’t go to the dentist because of the costs, so they have no idea how important is daily oral hygiene in order to have healthy teeth.

  6. As we learned in school when we want to see if our teeth are brushed correctly we can take plaque disclosing tablets. And also in the video it says that 5 minutes of brushing our teeth in enough and I believe that this is correct because we can easily take 5 minutes after every meal to make sure we have a perfect smile.

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1. You can find out if you have brushed your teeth thoroughly with the help of the plaque tablet.

    2. 4-5 minutes should be enough time for brushing your teeth.

    3. Another aspect that can be important is the softness of the tooth brush. It is recommended a soft to medium tooth brush to protect your enamel and your gums.

    ReplyDelete
  8. If I wasn’t studying at dentistry I would not know about the disclosing tablets as many people in the world. Most of the people brush their teeth a several times a day for one minute or less and they don’t know that is much better brushing it 2 times a day but for 4-5 minutes
I think that for an adequate tooth-brushing we have to use more than one technique and we have to choose the right technique for ourselfs either with the dentist’s help.
The water flosser seems more comfortable than a simple dental floss, I would like to try it out with pleasure.

    2. I agree with Agnes, I wouldn't have known about the disclosing tablets either and many of the people I know brush their teeth 1-2 minutes and think that the toothpaste is doing all the work instead of using a right technique which is truly important.

  9. 1. To find out if you've washed your teeth thoroughly you could use disclosing tablets. In this way, you could clearly see where you need to improve your brushing or where you have to pay more attention. Plaque is tricky because if you can't see it, it doesn't mean that it's not there...
    2. I agree with the statements in the video...It is ideal to wash your teeth for five minutes, but I am sure that most of the people brush their teeth for less than 5 minutes. As future dentists we should educate them and explain them all the steps.
    3. We've learned in Preventology that there are many brushing techniques and the dentist should teach the patient which technique he or she should use according to their own oral problems. If you're teeth or gums are healthy you could use the Bass technique which in my opinion is the best (you have to use a soft tooth brush because you might injure your gums if you use a medium or hard one). There is at least one brushing techniques for the major oral diseases.
    4. I think that the waterfloss is a great way to substitute the regular floss. It is more efficient, it takes less time and if you've got minor problems it can easily and quickly solve it. For instance, if you've got gingivitis, instead of using water you could use a disinfectant, such as clorhexidine which is more efficient in this case.

    3. I agree with Antonia. What I would like to mention further on: people tend not to wash their teeth correctly, because they are in a hurry. all the time. So we should accentuate brushing your teeth before bedtime (which is the most important), using a Bass technique for 4-5 minutes, with a soft brush. In this all technology based world maybe suggest using your so called smartphone and put on one of your favorite tracks (3-5min.) and stick to it as you wash your teeth. Add tongue.
p.s. I love the idea of a waterfloss! it is an amazing product!

  11. As my colleagues have already said, according to this video, you can see if you brushed your teeth thoroughly if you use a plaque disclosing tablet which reveals the remaining plaque. In my view 5 minutes should be enough for brushing our teeth. It is important that we use a toothpaste that's right for us. Today there is a wide variety of toothpaste designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity. We should ask our dentist or dental hygienist which toothpaste is right for us. Regular brushing of the teeth is the most important part of a dental health regimen. We learned another brush technique at Preventology called Charters' Method and this is a method of toothbrushing in which the brush is held horizontally, with the bristles lying against the teeth and gums and pointed in a coronal direction at 45 degrees so that the bristles lie half on the teeth and half on the gums. A vibratory cycle of a very constricted diameter is negotiated so that the brush head moves in a circular movement but the brush bristles remain fairly stationary while being agitated. The circular vibration loosens debris and pumps the bristles into interproximal areas to massage the tissues. It is a little bit complicated, but it's effective! I think that the water flosser would be an excellent choice for me, too . As many people I find difficult to floss my teeth daily.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OK, Gabriella, you explained the Charters' Method - how would you explain this method to a patient, considering the fact that he/she does not understand the term "coronal", what term would you use?

    2. I think that the best way to explain this method to our patients is practically show them on a plastic dental model and then we'll ask them to repeat what we have already shown.

  16. There are tablets that color the plaque, which can be used by any patient to observe if it exists and so they can improve their brushing technique. In the video we are shown that a brush should take 5 minutes. I agree with that, but I believe that many of us don’t have so much time and it is boring, especially when the operation is done with a normal brush. When it comes to an electric brush, the situation is different. My favorite method for brushing is the Stillmann method, the tooth brush is held at an angle of 70 degrees so that the brushing is done on the gums and on the teeth also. We uphold a light pressure on the whole dental crown, than the zone is decompressed and we move to a different group of teeth. And we it comes to waterfloss, I consider that it is a good investment. It cleans extraordinary the interdental spaces and under the gums.

2.We should brush our teeth 5 minutes.I agree with this because it is long enough to do a good cleaning of our teeth and short enough to take the time to do that after every snack.

3.I love children so much and I think their little teeth are so amazing. They look like pearls! We I will be a dentist I will take my time to explain them the Fones brushing method. All they have to do is to apply circular motions over theirs teeth and gums using a soft brush. This tehnique suits pacients with limited dexterity too.

2.I agree with the 5 minutes given brushing because it must allow at least 5 times each tooth surfaces.
3.From my point of view, the technique presented in the movie is not entirely correct because is recommended to start brushing from one end of the dental arch (left or right), covering all the teeth gradually to distal arch, first vestibular then orally and eventually occlusal, then move to the antagonist arch. If the patient switches from one to another arch it is possible to miss some surfaces and thus the cleaning is not correctly done.

    2. In the video it says approximately 5 minutes and so we learnt at Preventology classes but i think that it mainly depends on the individual. I think the right amount of time is the time you need to get the job done properly.
    3. I think the video sums it up just perfect, giving the basic "vocabulary" regarding dental prevention for the ordinary person however of course there are other aspects that can be mentioned as the type of toothbrush one can use depending on many factors as age, gum sensibility, periodontal problems and so forth, as well as the brushing technique, patients should try to adapt their brushing technique according to their dexterity or dental arrangement as well as other anatomic particularities in their oral cavity.
About the Waterpik waterfloss advertisement, i think is nothing more but a '''fancy tool'' used for something that you can easily do with a less cheaper and I would say effective when used properly dental floss. If you are too lazy for dental floss or lack the dexterity and have money to spend than buy a waterflosser.

You can check your work by plaque disclosing tablets what you can purchase in drogeria markets. 26. According to the video you can find out if you thoroughly brushed your teeth by buying “plaque disposal tablets” These tablets should be taken after brushing your teeth, and any missed areas where plaque is still present will turn a light shade of blue. According to the video any excess coloring of teeth from the tablet can be cleaned off by saliva, but anything that is plaque itself can be cleaned off by brushing over the areas once again, removing the plaque completely. According to the video, you should be able to thoroughly brush your teeth in 5 minutes, which should give you enough time to properly clean every area. I personally agree with the video on the 5 minute rule. Some people tend to rush brushing their teeth, which more often than not causes them to miss some areas.

  27. It is very easy to determine if our toothbrushing was done thoroughly, disclosing tablets will help us to estimate the efficience of a toothbrush. A correct brushing should take 4-5 minutes, but many people do not take this seriously. 30. The video regarding ''How to brush your teeth" clearly states the first question, by plaque disposal tablets. After using these tablets the neglected or poorly brushed areas will be revealed by the tablets specific color. Then it's easy to follow up again with your tooth brush and wipe the revealed plaque.

According to the video, I do agree about the suggested time, but I would like to mention that in some special cases, this time should be extended by a couple of minutes to finish some techniques. Using a mouth wash could greatly improve dental health while leaving you with a fresh breath.

There are a lot of different teeth brushing techniques such as: Bass, Stillmann, Charter, Roll, Fones, Smith-Bell methods, horizontal technique. Every method differs from the other in importance, moves, angle and time. These methods should be used in specific cases, for instance: gingivitis, hidden plaque (hard to reach, etc.).

P.S.: the motivation to brush your teeth properly was pretty funny but useful!
