We learned another brush technique at Preventology called sulcus brushing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MG6WCRCO2M ). We learned that this is the most effective technique to remove the dental plaque from among the teeth. It is important that for this brushing you have to use a soft toothbrush, because too hard brush may damage the gum. We learned about plaque disclosing tablets too. These are useful not only for children, but also for adults. With the tablets the dentist or parents can find out if the tooth brushing it was correctly or not.
Hi Orsolya, can you answer point 2 in the questions above as well?
The commentator says in this video that you should wash your teeth 5 minutes. I agree this idea, because we learned that you have to touch every surface of every tooth with toothbrush 5-10 times to clean it correctly. It follows that the toothbrush has to take 3- 5 minutes every occasion.
OK, Orsolya, so you agree WITH what is mentioned in the video about washing the surface of every tooth with THE toothbrush FOR 5-10 minutes (in capitals you have the error correction :-))You can also Reply to your colleagues' comments, not only mine, ok?
The first thing that came into my mind was '' where do I get one?'', and the second question that came was'' Is the water flosser expensive?. If anyone knows, where can I buy one, plese reply. If the statements and the statistics in this video are true, then, the water flosser is a great profilactic tool. I have to admit that I use the flossing tehnique not very often, but the wather flosser seems to bee a ''cure'' for those like me.
Would you recommend it to a dentist or you think it is suitable just for personal home use?
The wather flosser is created for personal home use, for those who are not using the dental floss ,or for those who are using it in a incorrect manner. We all know that the corect flossing tehnique is esential for preventing a gingival retraction, otherwise we will end up doing more harm than good( periodontal disease). This is why I think the wather flosser is perfect for personal home use.
You're right, the only thing I'm in doubt about is whether you meant "water flosser" or "weather flosser":-), the later, more or less as I spelt it is repeated twice...
I meant water flosser, and this reminded me of a joke that I heard in a movie. In the movie, a man was plaing the trumpet not so well, rather awful and one guy, standing in the audience, said to the man sitting next to him: '' I think, it's a combination between jazz and funk, called.....JUNK! '':))..we can se the conection between the joke an my mistake:))
I agree with you Cristi. I think that the water flosser would be an excellent choise for me too . I'm not used to flossing and I find it difficult with conventional methods.
According to the video, we can use plaque disclosing tablets. They are very useful because they color the plaque and the calculus in a showy way. This helps us to see the areas of our teeth we must brush better. And, as it is mentioned in the video as well, they are also useful to check the efficiency of the children’s oral hygiene. Here, we are told to brush our teeth 5 minutes. I do agree with it, but I think there is no problem if it takes more, we just have to pay attention not to hurt the gum. There are many tooth-brushing techniques, but every patient has his own dental necessities. For this reason the dentist have to teach his patients how to combine vertical, horizontal, circular moves in order to reduce dental plaque as much as it is possible, even in hard accessible areas.
Hi Cristina, I would challenge you to make a survey among your acquaintances, friends (not students in dental medicine), neighbours and see how long it takes for them to brush their teeth. You say that a brushing can take even more than 5 minutes.... I'd be curious to find out what the situation really is.
As expected, many people around us don’t brush their teeth more than 3-4 minutes. For this reason, I think it is our duty, both as friends and dentistry students, to explain them correct brushing-techniques. In this way, 3-4 minutes will be enough for them to have an excellent oral hygiene.
I made a research in my neighbourhood and I was shocked hearing that some of the people do not brush their teeth at all( in the twentyfirst century!),some of them brush their teeth for a very short time-2 or 3 minutes-and others wash their teeth unsystematic.
Debora, it is shocking indeed, but unfortunately this happens because of the high level of poverty in our country. Usually, people don’t go to the dentist because of the costs, so they have no idea how important is daily oral hygiene in order to have healthy teeth.
Yes,I agree that according to the video we should brush our teeth five minutes long.Good work takes time, isn't it? I do it so.I use dental floss, too. And everywhere, everytime I try to popularize dental floss. This waterfloss kit is brilliant. Is it available in our country?
As we learned in school when we want to see if our teeth are brushed correctly we can take plaque disclosing tablets. And also in the video it says that 5 minutes of brushing our teeth in enough and I believe that this is correct because we can easily take 5 minutes after every meal to make sure we have a perfect smile.
1. You can find out if you have brushed your teeth thoroughly with the help of the plaque tablet. 2. 4-5 minutes should be enough time for brushing your teeth.3. Another aspect that can be important is the softness of the tooth brush. It is recommended a soft to medium tooth brush to protect your enamel and your gums.
If I wasn’t studying at dentistry I would not know about the disclosing tablets as many people in the world. Most of the people brush their teeth a several times a day for one minute or less and they don’t know that is much better brushing it 2 times a day but for 4-5 minutes I think that for an adequate tooth-brushing we have to use more than one technique and we have to choose the right technique for ourselfs either with the dentist’s help. The water flosser seems more comfortable than a simple dental floss, I would like to try it out with pleasure.
We say: myself, but our......."either" is not correct in the sentence.
I agree with Agnes, I wouldn't have known about the disclosing tablets either and many of the people I know brush their teeth 1-2 minutes and think that the toothpaste is doing all the work instead of using a right technique which is truly important.
1. To find out if you've washed your teeth thoroughly you could use disclosing tablets. In this way, you could clearly see where you need to improve your brushing or where you have to pay more attention. Plaque is tricky because if you can't see it, it doesn't mean that it's not there...2. I agree with the statements in the video...It is ideal to wash your teeth for five minutes, but I am sure that most of the people brush their teeth for less than 5 minutes. As future dentists we should educate them and explain them all the steps.3. We've learned in Preventology that there are many brushing techniques and the dentist should teach the patient which technique he or she should use according to their own oral problems. If you're teeth or gums are healthy you could use the Bass technique which in my opinion is the best (you have to use a soft tooth brush because you might injure your gums if you use a medium or hard one). There is at least one brushing techniques for the major oral diseases.4. I think that the waterfloss is a great way to substitute the regular floss. It is more efficient, it takes less time and if you've got minor problems it can easily and quickly solve it. For instance, if you've got gingivitis, instead of using water you could use a disinfectant, such as clorhexidine which is more efficient in this case.
Antonia, for me - it's my, for he - his, and for you.........?
I found my mistake : it's "your" not "you're"
I agree with Antonia. What I would like to mention further on: people tend not to wash their teeth correctly, because they are in a hurry. all the time. So we should accentuate brushing your teeth before bedtime (which is the most important), using a Bass technique for 4-5 minutes, with a soft brush. In this all technology based world maybe suggest using your so called smartphone and put on one of your favorite tracks (3-5min.) and stick to it as you wash your teeth. Add tongue.p.s. I love the idea of a waterfloss! it is an amazing product!
Indeed, "you're" is the short form of "you are".
1. you cand see if you brushed your teeth thoroughly if you use a plaque disclosing tablet which reveals the remaining plaque.2.You should brush your teeth for 5 minutes. I agree with this, it doens't seem to much.3. In preventology , I found out that people with severe parodonthopaties need to use interdental brushes so they can clean their interdental spaces.
The correct form of "choise" is......
The correct from of ,,choise'' is ,,choice''. I'm sure she knows this aspect very well, but for sure she was in a hurry. Am I right, Cris? We all have a lot of exams during this period! Forgive us for these tiny mistakes, we are a little bit stressed! All the best! :)
Of course she knows, but you know Gabriella, attention or, better to say, lack of it is in many situations, especially in a doctor's position, as unexcusable as ignorance.Besides, we are trying to improve our writing in English here. There's another typo as well in "doens't". So try to avoid typos!
I am sorry...my intention wasn't to upset you. I just wanted to prove that it was a tiny typo...I didn't mean it in another way...I am really sorry for this misunderstanding!
I am not upset at all, just trying to help you be aware of how important it is to express ourselves correctly in writing. Because writing or any other type of communication is the image of ourselves that we show the others, so we'd like to show a proper image, wouldn't we?
As my colleagues have already said, according to this video, you can see if you brushed your teeth thoroughly if you use a plaque disclosing tablet which reveals the remaining plaque. In my view 5 minutes should be enough for brushing our teeth. It is important that we use a toothpaste that's right for us. Today there is a wide variety of toothpaste designed for many conditions, including cavities, gingivitis, tartar, stained teeth and sensitivity. We should ask our dentist or dental hygienist which toothpaste is right for us. Regular brushing of the teeth is the most important part of a dental health regimen. We learned another brush technique at Preventology called Charters' Method and this is a method of toothbrushing in which the brush is held horizontally, with the bristles lying against the teeth and gums and pointed in a coronal direction at 45 degrees so that the bristles lie half on the teeth and half on the gums. A vibratory cycle of a very constricted diameter is negotiated so that the brush head moves in a circular movement but the brush bristles remain fairly stationary while being agitated. The circular vibration loosens debris and pumps the bristles into interproximal areas to massage the tissues. It is a little bit complicated, but it's effective! I think that the water flosser would be an excellent choice for me, too . As many people I find difficult to floss my teeth daily.
OK, Gabriella, you explained the Charters' Method - how would you explain this method to a patient, considering the fact that he/she does not understand the term "coronal", what term would you use?
I think that the best way to explain this method to our patients is practically show them on a plastic dental model and then we'll ask them to repeat what we have already shown.
If you use plaque disclosing tablet you can see the arias that you don't reach using your brushing technique. You should brush your teeth 5 minutes. We should use dental floss, interdental brushing for better results.
AREAS, please.Mohammed, you will have to re-do the comment on Breaking bad news because you did not do what I requested. i.e. You should not tell us how to break bad news, but do it directly, as if you are talking to the patient. For example you can start like: Mr. X, it's good to have you to the dentist's today.... (just an example, from it I will realize how you put it, ok)
1. We can check if we have brushed our teeth correctly using plaque tablets.2. We should brush our teeth correctly 2 minutes once.3. The tooth brush and the paste are very important but the most important it is the technique.
Plaque revealing tablets are specially formulated to detect areas where bacterial plaque accumulates and to help us regularly check if our brushing technique is adequate. A proper brushing takes at least two minutes.People with braces may need to use floss threaders to get between the metal breakets.
1.Generally,for kids but not only is very attractive to check if they have brushed correctly use plaque tablets. For kids is funny because they see their colored teeth and for adults is worrying2.In my opinion a correct brushing lasts 4 minutes3.All of them are important, but we learnt this year that a correct brushing can be done without tooth paste. So,the most important thing is the tehnique .The toothpaste gives us a fresh breath
Laura, please rephrase/redo the first sentence in 1 - it does not sound good grammatically.
Usually,is easier to use plaque tablets, especially for children,to check if they have brushed correctly.
Better, still the subject is missing: IT is easier to use.......
There are tablets that color the plaque, which can be used by any patient to observe if it exists and so they can improve their brushing technique. In the video we are shown that a brush should take 5 minutes. I agree with that, but I believe that many of us don’t have so much time and it is boring, especially when the operation is done with a normal brush. When it comes to an electric brush, the situation is different. My favorite method for brushing is the Stillmann method, the tooth brush is held at an angle of 70 degrees so that the brushing is done on the gums and on the teeth also. We uphold a light pressure on the whole dental crown, than the zone is decompressed and we move to a different group of teeth. And we it comes to waterfloss, I consider that it is a good investment. It cleans extraordinary the interdental spaces and under the gums.
1.According to the video and taking into consideration what we learned in Preventology classes,we can find out if we have brushed our teeth correctly by using plaque disclosing tablets. They show us exactly the areas we "missed".2.We should brush our teeth 5 minutes.I agree with this because it is long enough to do a good cleaning of our teeth and short enough to take the time to do that after every snack.3.I love children so much and I think their little teeth are so amazing. They look like pearls! We I will be a dentist I will take my time to explain them the Fones brushing method. All they have to do is to apply circular motions over theirs teeth and gums using a soft brush. This tehnique suits pacients with limited dexterity too.I think Waterpick waterfloss is a great inovation.I find great that it reduces 99,9% of interdental plaque. This is just excellent!
Hi Laura, you have several mistakes which I would like you to correct:1.We I will be a dentist...2. theirs teeth3. This tehnique suits pacients
Oh,I'm sorry...I was in a hurry....1.When I will be a dentist 2.Their teeth 3.This tehnique is proper for pacients with limited dexterity too.
Only no. is good. 1. When I am a dentist myself (in temporals we cannot use the future)3. This TECHNIQUE is proper for paTients...
1.We can find/learn efficiency of brushing tooth by using pills which melt in oral cavity and color only the zones which presents bacterial plaque.2.I agree with the 5 minutes given brushing because it must allow at least 5 times each tooth surfaces.3.From my point of view, the technique presented in the movie is not entirely correct because is recommended to start brushing from one end of the dental arch (left or right), covering all the teeth gradually to distal arch, first vestibular then orally and eventually occlusal, then move to the antagonist arch. If the patient switches from one to another arch it is possible to miss some surfaces and thus the cleaning is not correctly done.
Plague-disclosing tablets can benefit anyone, typically made of vegetable dye, the tablets are ingenious and very easy to use.Or you can use the new plaque disclosing floss, which is blue in color to show the plaque you’ve removed after you use it.In the video we are told to brush our teeth 5 minutes.I agree but you must pay attention to your tooth sensitivity, change your bad habits (like stop biting your nails)and use a proper tooth brush(recommended soft) .You dont have to follow strictly a brushing technique ,you can combine moves by your own pleasure.Waterpick waterfloss : i want to say that is nice but in our it's and expensive product, but it is an great product especialy when toothbrush and floss can't reach.
1. We can find out if we have brushed our teeth thoroughly by using plaque disclosing tablets, I already knew this from Preventology classes, but I gotta say that I didn't know about this tablets until this year.2. Theoretically we should wash our teeth for 5-6 minutes, I agree with that, but in reality I don`t know how many people brush their teeth for 5 minutes.3. For lazy people or those who have a disability I would recommend the electric toothbrush- rechargeable with 5 customized brushing modes: daily clean, sensitive, polish, massage and deep clean.
Maria,"this" does not go with "tablets"I liked your no. 3 suggestion!
Thanks! And I'm sorry for my mistake "this" does not go with "tablets". The corect form is " these tablets".
1. Using plaque tablet after brushing teeth is a good way to analyze the technic and effectiveness of the brushing.2. According to the video you have to brush your teeth with a technique that involves brushing your posterior teeth thoroughly after which you brush your anterior teeth and this means 5 or so minutes.3. Other colleagues already stated and I have to stress the fact that the most important aspect is not the different types of marketed tooth paste but the softness of the tooth brush and flossing as frequently as possible. Actually waterfloss seems to do a better job at protecting your gums.
The problem here is only a word: technic;
1. You can easily find out if you brushed your teeth thoroughly by using plaque disclosing tablets, which highlight any sort of remnant plaque, are easy to use and can be found in any drugstore.2. In the video it says approximately 5 minutes and so we learnt at Preventology classes but i think that it mainly depends on the individual. I think the right amount of time is the time you need to get the job done properly.3. I think the video sums it up just perfect, giving the basic "vocabulary" regarding dental prevention for the ordinary person however of course there are other aspects that can be mentioned as the type of toothbrush one can use depending on many factors as age, gum sensibility, periodontal problems and so forth, as well as the brushing technique, patients should try to adapt their brushing technique according to their dexterity or dental arrangement as well as other anatomic particularities in their oral cavity.About the Waterpik waterfloss advertisement, i think is nothing more but a '''fancy tool'' used for something that you can easily do with a less cheaper and I would say effective when used properly dental floss. If you are too lazy for dental floss or lack the dexterity and have money to spend than buy a waterflosser.
You can easily find out if you have brushed your teeth properly with plaque disclosing tablets, seems pretty efficient. So in this video it says that you only need 5 minutes a day to completely brush your teeth,I agree, but I think that it is different from person to person, and what makes it different is that people use poor quality instruments and good quality instruments.
According to this video you can find out if you brushed well your teeths with plaque disclosing tablets. For a good mouth hygiene I should brush your teeths 5minutes daily. It's very good to accord attention at your brushing time and brushing techniques but you have to know the limits because excessive brushing, hard brushing and a longer time when you brush your teeths can bring you serious problems to you gums and you teeths health. The right time is 3-5 minutes, softly brushing and brushing techniques which are good for your teeths an which match the best!
Julian, the word order in your first sentence suggests that you brushed your teeth with plaque disclosing tablets. What would be the right word order?- "can bring serious problems to you gums and you teeths health" is a horrible sentence - so please correct it.
I fully agree with this video, because tooth brushing is the most important thing to protect your teeth. You can check your work by plaque disclosing tablets what you can purchase in drogeria markets. The tooth brushing is not enough because you should use complements too for example dental floss, periodontal brush. The video says that you need to wash your teeth for 5 minutes. I agree with this, because this time is enough for clean your teeths surfaces and your oral cavity. I reccomend the correct toothbrush for the teeth and the paste is important too to be good quality.
Boroka, please fill with the correct form in your sentence: this time is enough for ............Teeths - similar mistake before - please tell us the singular and plural form of this noun.
*cleaning your teeths surfaces and your oral cavity
So the sentence goes like: "this time is enough for cleaning your teeth surfaces". Please pay attention to the noun: 1 tooth - 2 teeth (it is an irrergular noun) and very important for you know its correct form as a future dentist because you will work with TEETH!
According to the video you can find out if you thoroughly brushed your teeth by buying “plaque disposal tablets” These tablets should be taken after brushing your teeth, and any missed areas where plaque is still present will turn a light shade of blue. According to the video any excess coloring of teeth from the tablet can be cleaned off by saliva, but anything that is plaque itself can be cleaned off by brushing over the areas once again, removing the plaque completely. According to the video, you should be able to thoroughly brush your teeth in 5 minutes, which should give you enough time to properly clean every area. I personally agree with the video on the 5 minute rule. Some people tend to rush brushing their teeth, which more often than not causes them to miss some areas.
It is very easy to determine if our toothbrushing was done thoroughly, disclosing tablets will help us to estimate the efficience of a toothbrush. A correct brushing should take 4-5 minutes, but many people do not take this seriously. It is recomended the use of soft toothbrush, because soft ones do not damage the gingiva, the choice of the toothpaste is not the more important. I think the waterfloss does much more effective cleaning than regular floss.
According to this video you can find out if you brushed well your teetH if you use a plaque disclosing tablets. If you want to brush correctly your teetH,you have to brush your teeth for 5 minutes and you should brush them softly ,with ,,the roll,, technique especially if you have gums problems.
I think that using plaque disclosing tablets can be entertaining.According to the video, it's only one method to see if we brushed our teeth correctly.I agree with the fact that we should brush our teeth at least 5 minutes. Just think about it : we loose a tooth and it wont be the same. Replacing them? It's not the same feeling because it's not a living tooth. A human realises how important are those 5 minutes of teeth washing, only when he loses one or two teeth.
Good point Zoli about the value of teeth. However, - we don’t say "a human" but...........- and because this is not a question: "how important are those 5 minutes of teeth washing" we do not have an inversion, so we say:.............Please correct the two mistakes you’ve made above.
The video regarding ''How to brush your teeth" clearly states the first question, by plaque disposal tablets. After using these tablets the neglected or poorly brushed areas will be revealed by the tablets specific color. Then it's easy to follow up again with your tooth brush and wipe the revealed plaque.According to the video, I do agree about the suggested time, but I would like to mention that in some special cases, this time should be extended by a couple of minutes to finish some techniques. Using a mouth wash could greatly improve dental health while leaving you with a fresh breath. There are a lot of different teeth brushing techniques such as: Bass, Stillmann, Charter, Roll, Fones, Smith-Bell methods, horizontal technique. Every method differs from the other in importance, moves, angle and time. These methods should be used in specific cases, for instance: gingivitis, hidden plaque (hard to reach, etc.).P.S.: the motivation to brush your teeth properly was pretty funny but useful!
1.According to this video you can find out if you brushed well your teeth if you use a plaque disclosing tablets.2. In the video it says approximately 5 minutes and so we learnt at Preventology but i think that it mainly depends on the individual. 3.Other colleagues already stated that the most important aspect is not the different types of marketed tooth paste but the softness of the tooth brush and flossing as frequently as possible!
