General health issues - what do they mean for our teeth?

Watch the video on being overweight, below:

1.       1. What is your opinion on sugar consumption in your area/age group and what are the implications,  from the point of view of the current study?
2.      2.  Why should you as a future dentist be aware of these two topics?
3.Do you know about other such strange legally enforced health issues?
      4. What would you promote as a must, stomatologically speaking, if you had the power and why?

  1. I realised, that sosmetimes, when I was bored, I went to the kitchen to eat something. In the majority of these situations I ate cake, chockolate. I can imagine, that I was/ am not alone with this problem. So I can say that we (my age goup) eat losciousness every day. I know that it is not healthy and I try to eat consistently. For example from a little time I eat cake only after main meals or I drink tea withouth sugar. I wolud like to mention, that our brain needs sugar and when we learn we use more, so we have to supply it. This does not means that it is good if we eat every day chockolate, coke, candy. If we eat them in reason, we will not be fat and our brain will work good as well.

  2. So, Emilia, your point is that balance is the key, isn't it.
Also please consider the following: This does not mean..., chocolate, our brain will work well, with moderation (instead of "in reason")

I did not get the meaning of "losciousness", can you help me?

  3. Hello Teacher. At first I am sorry thar I did not react this comment, I do not want to excuse myself. Yes, I think that the balance is the key and I have to say, that when I wrote the first comment I was not attentive. I wanted to get rid of this task and I wrote superficially. So, yes, if we eat chockolate and other kind of sweetnesses with moderation our brain will work well and will not have healthy problems. I worte wrongly taht word, because I was looking for on the internet and I did not check in my dictionary. The correct word would be: lusciousness and the meaning is sweet, sweetness, I do not know that it is correct or not.

    1. It's ok,
I asked you about the word, because we usually say: sweets, sweet things (NOT lusciousness or sweetnesses!) Also, in order to avoid typos (e.g." that"instead of "taht" ) you can type in Word first (which underlines wrongly spelt words) and then paste them here. Hope it helps you from now on.

  4. It is very important to make the distinction between added sugars and sugars that occur naturally in foods like fruits and vegetables.
These are healthy foods. The naturally occurring sugars are absolutely fine.
However, added sugars are those that are added to foods. If we want to lose weight and optimize our health, then we should do our best to avoid foods that contain added sugars or fast food.
Me, for example I love chocolate, but I don`t eat it every day.
For us as students is hard enough to eat healthy every day because program does not allow, but all we can do is to try to balance the healthy food with unhealthy food.
I found on the Internet that in Denmark, they have started a "fat tax".
I would like to promote exercising during work, i found it very intersting and is something that we do for ourselves.

  5. Unfortunately, nowadays, more and more teenagers and children are consuming huge amount of sugar, not only by eating sweets but also consuming soda, fast-foods and unhealthy food which contain a lot of it. This also happen in my age group and not necessarily because we want so, but because our schedule doesn’t allow us to have healthy meals. Students always prefer to grab something and don’t think at the consequences of such an unbalanced diet.

I have never heard that being overweight can be illegally, but I know that in USA the government has encouraged the soft drinks producers to reduce sugar level in soda with 30%, in order to decrease the number of obese people which is alarmingly high.

    1. It is pathetic that overweightness can be illegally. What if it is caused by some malfunction in the body, for example hypotyroidia and so on.I would rather index the sales promotions which encourage people to consume sweets, coke, etc.

  6. I realize that in today’s world, it can be tough to completely avoid sugar since it is so readily available. Unfortunately, the widespread availability of sugar does not make it any healthier…
Especially for kids who are still developing their nutritional foundation, metabolism, and hormones, even a little sugar can be harmful. As Iancu Maria already said, for us as students is hard enough to eat healthy, as hard as it can be sometimes, we try to stick to whole, real foods as much as possible and avoid any processed foods, especially those containing grains and sugars. Also known as "white death", sugar isn't really what our bodies have in mind when it comes to good nutrition.
As a future dentist I have a question for you: do you want a beautiful smile? If you answred with ’yes’, you have to avoid eating too much sugar! Keep your pearly whites in perfect shape by keeping sugar to a minimum. From my point of view, sugar encourages the cavity-causing bacteria to hang around your teeth and drill away causing decay. And be very careful of juice, I heard that it is just a very concentrated source of sugar and some juices have even been shown to cause more damage than cola. Some people may still maintain that in our material world, everything depends on time but if we are under the age of 30 and want a healthy life, we should definitely get a bicycle instead of a car. I find interesting what Iancu Maria said about ’fat tax’ in Denmark, this news made me laugh, I have never imagined something like this.

    1. Till people do not realize that they are hazarding with their own life and health, no law or any policy can stop them eating wrong. They must change their thinking, find their inner peace and they suddenly will not feel the need to eat something sweet.

    2. For sure, Debora, I have to agree with you, All the things you have already said are the expressions of truth. We must change our way of thinking and live a healthy life.

  7. Nowadays, sugar consumption is increasing. Looking at the western civilisation and the number of fat people is concerning because we tend to evolve and adapt the western way of living. Looking at the little children of Romania, we see more and more oversized children. We must do something. As a stomatologist, I would promote the reducing of soda drinking.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Can you find another term instead of "oversized" for some of the Romanian children, one referring to weight?

      Delete
    2. Maybe chubby. I don't know why, but I consider that the word "fat"can be to harsh.

      Delete
    3. ToO harsh, indeed, but what I mean is that the right word is "OVERWEIGHT", which is a professional, neutral word which can be used. I guess you understand what I mean: Romanian: "supraponderal".

      Delete
  8. It happens sometimes with me too that I am in a bad mood and I eat sweets and I drink coffee with extra sugar but it does not mean that I’m oversized for that reason. At my age group there are a lot of overweighted people but not just because the sugar, but also the greasy food, casual meals and the insufficient sport can be a reason. A lot of people say, that they want to slim but the truth is they are lazy to do something for it and give up on diets an sports easily.

    1. Agnes, I suppose you found the word "oversized" in the dictionary. I'm afraid to tell you have to think of another one related to weight. Can you guess it?

  9. I am impressed by the Japanese people... I totally agree with their ideas regarding the health of their own country. Sugar consumption in our area has dramatically increased over the last decade and we can clearly see the facts on the street every day. Kids are affected the most (and this is because of their uneducated parents). People are getting lazy and fat and what is worse is that they don't realize that their eating habit is slowly killing them. They should reeducate themselves and seek help. Ok, I know there is a predisposition to being fat, but that is not an excuse to try exercising more and eat low carbohydratefood and so on. One of the biggest problems in modern society is the unbalanced consumption of sugar. Japanese people are taking care of their nation and we should learn something from them. ( I think that they live that long because of their geographical advantage, food situation, genes, education and nonetheless their will)
As a future dentist I will advise my patients to avoid added sugars and try to consume balanced meals not only for the sake of their teeth, but for their own general health.
Paying a "fat tax" in countries like America would be a good idea!

    1. I cannot agree more! in my opinion it not just about sugar. It is about eating habits in general. At least in our region. Think about it, when you go somewhere what is the first thing you do? drink and eat. But the real problem is that anytime we are served food, of any kind, we tend to eat everything that is on our plate, because it is "immoral" to leave leftovers behind.
People should eat only until they feel their hunger vanish, not by any matter until you feel like exploding!

  10. My opinion on sugar consumption is that people around me consume a large quantity of sugar without really knowing , because few people really read what is written on the product. What is more I believe that affect more children , younger generations than ours because nowadays parents buy them everything they ask . Coca Cola has become a daily and usual part of the beverages we consume, sometimes replacing water.
As a future dentist we should be aware of the changes in the human alimentation because what we eat is reflecting on our teeth health
I don't know any strange legally enforced health issues
I would promote oral hygiene because i believe it is important that people clean the remainings of the chemicals in their foods of their teeth. I also believe that is important that people know about the fact that is not healty to wash your teeth after you ate something acid because this really distroys your enamel.

  11. I think that sugar consumption depends on our habits too. For example, I drink tea and coffee without sugar. When I started this it was a little strange, but now I think that drinks has good taste without sugar too. In my opinion another problem is the fact that the sweeter drinks and foods are more delicious. Children prefer more the chocolate than fruits and healthier foods.

    1. Hi Orsolya,
there's one grammar mistake: drinks HAVE good taste.
Also, when we refer to preferences, we say: children prefer chocolate TO fruits...

Can you express one of your preferences, so that I see you understood this construction?

      Delete
    2. Thank you for correcting me! I am understanding now this construction. Example: I prefer blue colour to pink.

  12. I beleive that the consumption of sugar increased very much as the industry producing all kind of sweets is developing so much.
Mostly the kids and young people are affected and I am affraid that this is something we have to fight hard agains.

  13. In my opinion as a student I know that we, the students, have an unhealthy lifestyle and that sweets are giving us the energy that we need to study and that Coke for example is drank by a lot of students to help them stay awake for hours to study. Energizers are also used frequently and more students that don't do exercises enought are beginning to gain weight.
I have never heard abought those kind of laws but I think that in a few years the population will be very unheathy due to the crazy lifestyle that we are having today and those kind of health issues will be considered in other countries as well.
As a dentist my first concern would be to explain to my pacients exctly what the downsides of a high sugar diet are and not only tell them that they shouldn't eat sweets, so they would realise the danger and would act adequatly.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Regarding our teeth. Too much sugar always was, is and and will be harmful to our teeth. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that nowadays people have a totally unbalanced diet full of carbs and sugar. We eat on the run and we consume food without being very thoughtful of it’s content. It’s true ,I think that very much sugar is consumed and if we pay attention to each label of any product we buy in supermarket we will find high doses of sugar. We should combine proteins and carbohydrates each in a dose somewhat known and of course the most important is to make exercise .As future dentist I recommend people to do as much exercise given how lazy we can be most of the times, to consume less sugars and to keep a good hygiene of our teeth.
It has also surprised to me to find that Japan have imposed such forced measures, but I can’t adjudge or appreciate this decision. Every man is responsible for his health and his life.

  17. Many of my friends consume more sugar when they are stressed. We shouldn’t forget from the article that “too much sugar does not just make us fat, it can also make us sick”. I appreciate the Japanese who take care about their health.

  18. Depending on our eating and drinking patterns,it's possible for the bacteria to produce acid almost constantly in our mouth. This can happen if we sip soft drinks or sweetened coffee throughout the day. Eating many small sweet or starchy snacks can produce the same effect. The resulting acid damage adds up, so decay is more likely.I know is very hard to give up sweets but "eat to live, not live to eat"

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. I must be honest:I love sweets.I love to eat them, bake them and enjoy them, but unfortunetly I am aware of the negative part of consuming sweets,so I try so hard to reduce the amount of sweets I used to eat and I am a lucky person because my friends do the same now.
The study clearly show us that those who consume sugar food are likely to die from heart disease that those who have a healthy diet.

2.As a future dentist I think it's important for me to know not just as a doctor, but as a person that to much sugar can "not only make me fat,but it can also make me sick",and of course it's important to let my patients know about the consequences of a bad diet.

    3. I really never heard of such a strange legally enforced health issues but I admire Japanese people for the law they have implemented.

  20. Most of the caries is due to large quantity of sugar and sweets, the lack of adequate brushing.
My age group unfortunately has a very unhealthy diet which consists mostly of sugar.
You have to raise awareness especially in these two topics as they have great impact on our dental health as well.
New smoking laws which obligate companies to illustrate pictures of aftermath of heavy smoking was kind of strange at first.
I would promote a strong emphasis on prevention because with the correct diet, oral hygiene and awareness you should very well lower risks of diseases.

  21. I think that junk food and unhealthy diet is getting more and more popular as the number of consumers
is increasing year by year, sugar is being consumed in many more ways than previous years; the more accessible the junk food is the more is being consumed. As a future dentist I find this topic very relevant because obviously with more sugar being consumed, the more frequent are the cases of caries and other dental problems. I totally agree with this new Japanese idea,I think that other nations should follow their example. As a dentist you should promote of course the importance of proper oral hygiene as well as suggesting people to see a dentist every 6 months or so,if control is done regularly, the chances that oral health be at risk are significantly reduced.

  22. 1.I think that in our region there is more sugar consumed than in Japan. Because of this children nowadays are getting fatter . Being fat involves a high rate of other diseases, such as caries, diabetes.
2.You have to explain to your patient the implications of consuming a large amount of sugar and teach them how to prevent them.
3.No, I don't know such strange legally enforced health issues.

I should be aware of these topics because as a doctor I will give not only dental but general health maintaining advices.

  24. Nowadays its a big problem that people consume more sugar and unhealthy food than that should be healthy for them. I'ts not their fault because most of the grocery shops and restaurants are offering unhealthy, unnatural food with a lots of chemical components. They are not just risky for because they make you fat but they can occouse cancer or other diseases. Its a hard task to eat healthy foods, because they are generally expensive and not always easy to find them in the shops.

  25. Over the past years, even in our country, which has a tradition of consuming mostly natural foods there has been an increase of foods that have unnatural ingredients. I am talking about fast food restaurants, half-prepared food from the supermarkets and artificially grown fruits and vegetables. All these types of foods mainly the fast foods have a high content of sugar(soft drinks, hamburgers etc.) Sadly the biggest victims of these unhealthy products are the younger generation because they are persuaded by the companies and the media. Sugary foods are of course a problem for dentist as well, but in my opinion there are other consequences, which are of more importance(heart problems, diabetes, obesity etc.) If it would be possible legally I would enforce compulsory dental check ups at companies at least twice a year.

  27. Firstly I want to say that nowadays, unfortunately, fast food and sodas and lots of sweets and products with added sugars are preferred by teenagers. They eliminate vegetables and fruits from their diet and they continue to.eat and drink junk food and junk drinks. Like a future dentist,I will promote in the most tragically way ,all consequences of junk food, probably they will stop to.consume it. 1. Julian,as we already know sugar and tooth decay are closely linked. If you want to help your future patients, you have here a few ways to reduce the risk of tooth decay:
Cut down on sticky, sugary foods like lollies.
Drink water instead of cordials, soft drinks and juices.
Allow at least two hours between meals.
Brush and floss regularly and after meals.
Drink fluoridated water or use fluoride treatments.
